Cinematography in The Truman Show
Cinematography in the Truman Show
The scene I will be using to show cinematography in the
Truman show is the Do something scene with Truman and his “Wife”.
Straight away a medium shot is used to create a sense of
relaxation between the two characters. This allows the viewers to analyse how
Truman’s “Wife” is acting and the character that she is playing. So the medium
shot helps to show a relaxation between the two people. It helps to make the
film feel natural and comfortable and Truman won’t notice what is happening as
there is hidden cameras everywhere.
The second type of camera shot used is a two shot which has
been used to show the interaction of Truman and his “Wife”. It helps to show a
relaxed nature between both of them and there familiar relationship.
The next shot is an extreme close up that is zooming in on
Truman’s “Wife” as she is advertising the “Mococa” This type of shot helps to
show a massive change between what is real and what is fake in Truman’s life.
As all around Truman is product placement and advertising. This is what helps
Truman to discover the world he lives in is fake.
The next shot is a close up of Truman who is getting angry
at his “Wife” for talking strangely and is advertising the “Mococa.”This type
of shot has been used to show the emotion of anger that Truman is feeling. It
has been used to make the audience feel empathy for Truman whose life has been
recorded constantly.
The next shot is an Eye level shot which has been taken to
show what Truman is seeing and making the audience feel invisible in the scene
like they are seeing something they shouldn’t. This shot has been used to make
the audience see what Truman is seeing and the fact of the anger that he is
walking with. The effect that this causes is that the audience is just a
witness to the unfolding events in the Kitchen of Truman’s house.
The next shot is a secret camera hidden in the necklace of
Truman’s wife. It is a mixture of close up and eye level shot creating a sense
of invisibility for the audience and the close up helps us see the emotions
that Truman are feeling.
The next shots are a sequence of eyelevel shots and close up
shots. This sequence helps to show how frightened Truman’s wife is at Truman’s
Rage. The eyelevel shots help to make the audience feel scared for Truman as
they are experiencing the same things as him. Whereas the close up shots of
Truman help the audience show what emotions he is feeling.
The next shot is shown from a Tv. This shot is a high angle
shot. As we are looking down on Truman and His wife. This shows a sense of how
insignificant they are as appear smaller and that Kristoff is controlling
everything that is happening. This brings in the effect that you want Truman to
escape and stop being a puppet of Kristoff’s.
